Overview
After the completion of the Conditions and Trends analysis, the second major component of Phase I is to determine “Community Character Resources” and identify means of protecting these resources. This step is highly dependant upon Brookhaven Town residents participating in the “Environmental, Cultural and Open Space (ECOS) Workshops.” Residents can provide invaluable local knowledge about the Town’s character and what should be protected in order to maintain, enhance and preserve Brookhaven’s unique and valued sense of place.

The main purpose of these workshops is to identify the areas of the Town that have positive character elements that should be preserved and/or protected. Participants will be provided basic information about community resource elements including natural, historic, cultural, scenic, and agricultural resources, as well as elements that positively contribute to the community’s character. An inventory of each resource and the types of tools, organizations, laws, policies, etc. which can be used to protect the resource will be provided.

Three ECOS Workshops were held January 29−31, 2008 at public schools in the North, Center and South part of Town. Each workshop covered the same information and exercises, however three workshops were held to make it easier for stakeholders throughout the Town to attend. All workshops are open to the public and invitations will be sent to key stakeholders including the members of the Citizens’ Assembly and stakeholders who would like to be contacted.
